Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

Overview :

GATE, elaborated as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an entrance examination for admissions into to post graduate programs at National level. The examination is conducted by the seven IITs located at Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Roorkee, Madras, Delhi and Kharagpur along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on behalf of the reputed organization of NCB-GATE i.e. National Coordination Board belonging to Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Government of India. The courses offered with the help of the financial assistance provided by MHRD and other government agencies are usually M.E., Direct Ph.D. and M.Tech in Indian Institutes of Higher Education. GATE scores are highly used by the public as well as private sectors.

Eligibility :

The eligibility criteria for GATE varies as per the course taken and are described below:

For B.E./B.TECH./B.Pharm. –
  • The candidates must hold a Bachelor degree in the stream of Engineering/Technology once completed the 10+2 level or even hold the same after getting passed through B.Sc. or is a diploma holder in Engineering /Technology
  • Only those candidates can apply who have either passed the minimum qualifying criteria or in the final year of their studies
  • Current year is the basis of qualifying into GATE instead of previous or later years.

For B.Arch.–
  • The applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in Architecture which is usually a 5 year degree course
  • They should be either in the final year of their degree or have completed the same earlier
  • Only current year will be considered for the qualification criteria irrespective of the previous and later years.

For B.Sc. (Research)/B.S. –
  • Candidates should possess Bachelor’s degree in Science or any PG diploma or a 4 year degree course after 10+2 level
  • Applicants should be either in last or 4th year of their coursework or have already completed the same.
  • Only current year will be considered for the qualification criteria.

For M.Sc./M.A./MCA or Equivalent-
  • The applicants should possess a Master’s Degree in any branch belonging to the discipline of Science/ Statistics/Computer Applications/ Mathematics or any equivalent coursework.
  • Applicants should be either in the final year of their coursework or they have already completed their degree
  • Only current year will be considered for the qualification criteria

For Int. M.E. /M.Tech. (Post-B.Sc.) –
  • Candidates should possessa post-B.Sc., Integrated or Master’s Degree in the field of Engineering/Technology. The program should be of 4 years or equivalent.
  • Applicants from 2nd/3rd/4th year are eligible to apply for the exam
  • The qualifying criteria is applicable up to two years from the current year

Marking Scheme

Questions carry 1 mark and 2 marks

Negative Marking

There will also be a negative mark for the wrong answer selected in MCQ. For a 1-point MCQ, 1/3 of the points will be deducted for incorrect answers. Similarly, for a 2-point MCQ, 2/3 points will be deducted for incorrect answers.
