NITC came into existence in the year 1961, in the name of Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC). It got its present name in the year 2002 and is fully funded by the government. The motto of the institute is “From Darkness, Lead us unto Light”. The campus is located in foothills of westernghats, 22kms north-east of Kozhikode, Kerala. It covers an area of 300 acres (1.2km2). Aruna Jayanti is the present Chairman and Dr.Sivaji Chakravorti is the Director of the institute.

The National Institute of Technology, Calicut is set up in picturesque landscape. The campus has 12 hostels for boys and 4 hostels for girls. It’s the only institute with supercomputer. NITC’s Central Library is a digital library and one of the largest in India. It also provides several other facilities to the students like Central Computer Center, Campus Networking Center, Guest House, Engineering Unit, Auditorium and Open air theatre. And many sports facilities like gymnasium, swimming pool, basketball, hockey, volleyball, football, badminton, tennis and cricket. NIT, Calicut also has Day Care Centre for the children of staff, faculty and students.

NIT, Calicut helps its students in the placement process and invites the giant corporates for the same. The past recruiters that have visited National Institute of Technology, Calicut campus for placement are companies like Accenture, Ashok Leyland, Bajaj, GDA Tech, Hindustan Petroleum, Alstom, HSBC, IBM, CISCO, Crompton Greaves, Cummins, Intel, ITC Paper, DLF, Microsoft, Toshiba, NTPC, Oracle, Google, Philips, Sapient, TCS, Wipro, Yahoo and many more. The placement rate of the institute has been approximate 60% over the years for all the courses and the highest package offered was for Rs. 8.8 Lakhs p.a. for Computer Science and Engineering.
