It is one of the 30 NITs established in India. Commonly known as NIT, Nagaland it came into existence in 2009 as a part of Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012). The institute started operating from the year 2010. It is located at Chumukedima, Dimapur in Nagaland.

NIT, Nagaland has six residential hostels for both boys and girls. The most important feature of the institute the Central Library has 7200 books, 1400+ eBooks and other non book materials. The National Institute of Technology, Nagaland has both indoor and outdoor games like badminton, table tennis, carom, chess, cricket and football. The students also take part in sports events like “ALL NIT SPORTS MEET”. The institute caters to the other needs of the institute like medical, canteen, post office and a branch of State Bank of India, Chumukedima.

The institute has a Training & Placement Cell provides the students with the best possible training and placements. With their hardwork 70% of the students from the first batch of the institute got placed. The highest package offered to NIT, Nagaland students in the year 2014-2015 was Rs.13 lakhs per annum and the average package was between Rs.3.5-4 lakhs per annum. In the same year 75% of the students were placed from Electrical & Electronics Engineering department, 66.67% from Computer Science & Engineering department and 80.77% from Electronics & Communication Engineering department. The average percentage placement for the year 2014-2015 was 77.46. The past recruiters that have visited the campus are namely, BPCL, Capital Via, Freshdesk, Trifid Research, Amdocs, DRDO, Pradan, Wipro, Vodafone, Zaloni, Face, L&T Infotech, Nokia Networks, Virtusa, tech Mahindra, Retail On, NSEIL, MuSigma,etc.
