It is the 18th NIT created by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It got the it’s NIT status in the year 2004. Earlier the institute was known as Bihar College of Engineering, Patna. NIT, Patna was originally established in the year 1886 in the name of Survey Training School. The campus is located on the south bank of holy river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat in Patna.

The National Institute of Technology, Patna provides for residential facilities in three boys hostels and two girls hostels with mess, Wi-Fi and security. It is very well said “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body” with this saying the institute encourages its students to take part in sports activities like table tennis, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball and athletics. The fully automated library has a huge collection of books and e-journals. The well equipped computer centre is of great importance to the students, teachers and research scholars. NIT, Patna has a laboratory for each department.

The National Institute of Technology, Patna has a Training & Placement Cell which works for the fulfillment of its commitment of job to every student and organizes, coordinates for placement. The recent placement rate for both B.Tech and M.Tech was 83%.
