The Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad was formerly known as Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. It was recently given its present name under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Earlier on 9th December, 1926 it came into existence by Lord Irwin. IIT, Dhanbad got the status of Deemed University in 1967 under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. The campus is situated in the coal belt i.e. 260 kms from Kolkata on an area of 393 acres of land.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad is well known for its technological and research education in India. The institute has a Training and Placement Cell that helps the students in their placement process and establishing relation with the recruiting companies. In the year 2015 the maximum package paid to the student was Rs. 26 lakhs per annum. The number of B.Tech students who were placed was 452 and the approximate placement rate was 83.5%. From the Dual Degree program 21 students were placed and 8 out of 12 students were placed from Integrated M.Tech program. The institute has tie ups with renowned universities and institutes across the globe which is beneficial for the students and the institute both.
