It was established in the year 1961 by the name of Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College. On 26th June, 2002 it was given the status of deemed university and was recongnized as one of the National Institute of Technology. MNNIT, Allahabad or NIT, Allahabad is fully funded by the central government. The institute is located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh covering an area of 222 acres of land.

Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad provides numerous facilities to its students. The students are catered in seven boys and two girl hostels with all the basic amenities and canteen. The central library is the temple of learning. It has a collection of 1,04,382 books and bound periodicals. The library acts as a nerve centre of the institute and subscribes to 53 Indian & 237 International technical periodicals. MNNIT, Allahabad campus is also a house for bank branches of Vijay Bank and State Bank of India.
