NITD was earlier known as Regional engineering College, Durgapur. It was founded in the year 1960 by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal. The institution is a deemed university. Under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 the institute was accredited with the status of Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute is located 160 kms north-west of Kolkata and occupies an area of 187 acres (0.8 km2).

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a fully residential and coeducational institute. It has two hostels for girls and seven hostels for boys with canteen and shopping complex. The institute also has guest houses for the parents and guests of the faculty and the students in the institute. NITD has branches of State Bank of India, Canara Bank and Post Office in the campus. The well equipped digital library has vast collection of journals, text books and reference books. The Student Activity Center has indoor gymnasium and auditorium with contemporary equipments. The various other facilities provided to the students at NIT, Durgapur are sports, music club, photography club, enteract club, dance club and medical facilities. The student faculty ratio is 2:1.

NITD has a Placement Office which helps the graduating students of all the fields in getting jobs. The invited companies at National Institute of Technology, Durgapur are provided with the infrastructural facilities for conducting interviews, tests and discussions. The companies from both public and private sector visit and they are namely WIPRO, Kotak Mahindra, Airtel, AMDOCS, Oracle, Infosys, IBM, Novell, De Shaw, Microsoft, Infosys, IBM, Amazon, FACTSET, Tata Motors, Ericsson, Godrej, Vedanta, etc. The placement rate of NIT, Durgapur for undergraduate was 63% for the year 2015-2016 and for the post graduate was 22% for the same year.
